“Someday I want to be rich. Some people get so rich they lose all respect for humanity. That’s how rich I want to be” BY Rita Rudner
Wealth is the most attractive object that many people often run after by making crimes and losing themselves to it. Wealth is just a green sheet, but it can change the life of a poor, hungry, wrinkled person to a rich, fat person. However, it is the same green sheet that can transform the fate of a rich person back to a poor, hungry, wrinkled person. There are many reasons a man can chase money and wealth but having too much obsession about wealth is dangerous as it can diminish values and morals in the pursuer’s mind.
To begin with, Daisy loved money so much that she agreed to marry Tom. If she had waited for some more time, then she would have married Gatsby who represents the new rich. She is a manipulative, selfish, confused women and only cares for her own well. Also, as discussed in class, when Daisy is seen in the form of a flower, her petals and her dress depict purity while the yellow in the inside symbolizes her “golden” heart which is only running after money and gold.
On the other hand, Kismine also was immoral, naïve and views everything through money. She is used to being able to buy anything and had little respect for things other than money. But in the end, she understands that money cannot buy her happiness. This realization helps her to have a happy life in the future with her boyfriend, but Daisy is stuck with Tom because of her obsession for wealth. So, wealth is not only attractive, but it is also dangerous as it can diminish values and morals in the pursuer’s mind and imprisons them into wealth and sadness forever..
